INTRODUCTION
Welcome to TopicX v1.11. I'll start off by quoting Scott from his README.1ST
document in v1.10...
Many other matters are keeping me busy, so no future
updates are planned for TopicX. Unlike previous versions
of TopicX, v1.10 is freeware. No fee is required to use
TopicX, although donations will be gladly accepted.
Scott Dudley, TopicX v1.10 README.1ST, 18 Nov 1991
This statement hasn't changed from Scott's point of view, but it has in that
I offered to take over the development and support of TopicX, mainly because
I needed some support and Scott didn't have the time, and I knew there were
others just like me. So, Scott kindly handed the source over to me under the
condition I kept TopicX free to all. Donations should still be directed
Scott's way.
This version is purely for fixing of the problems I have been able to find
and that have been reported to me. It is also a way of letting you all know
I am now the contact for any problems or enhancements you may have.
I have lots of idea's for the version of TopicX after v1.11, but I welcome
and encourage any ideas you may have.
If you decide NOT to use TopicX I would like to know why! Your input as to why
TopicX didn't do what you expected is very valuable to others and the future
of TopicX.
At this stage the documentation to TopicX is not going to be updated!
Volunteers are welcome. For this version you will need Scott's original
TOPICX.PRN and WHATSNEW.110 files, along with this file to know what all
the functions and options are. WHATSNEW.110 outdates TOPICX.PRN and this
file outdates both of them.
IMPORTANT NOTICE TO OS/2 USERS OF TOPICX
It might not be obvious to new users of TopicX (for OS/2) that TopicX (v1.1
or greater) REQUIRES (repeat -=REQUIRES=-) the file MSGAPI.DLL shipped with
either of MAXIMUS (v2.01 or greater) for OS/2 or SQUISH (v1.01 or greater)
for OS/2.
CHANGES
=*= Changes from TopicX 1.10 to TopicX 1.11 beta/a =*=
* Fixed up problem where memory was being reported as zero under the OS/2
version.
* Fixed where message numbers being "saved" were being reported to the screen
and log file as 0.
* Added a "whirlygig" when processing the messages, it "turns over" every
five messages.
* Fixed a couple of "non-critical" TRAP D's.
=*= Changes from TopicX 1.11 beta/a to TopicX 1.11 beta/b =*=
* Fixed the -p option. It didn't work in v1.10, although it wrote the .DAT
file out, it _never_ read it in and/or used it! Also, if the .DAT file
didn't exist, TopicX aborted instead of creating it. These were just a
couple of problems among many with the -p option now fixed.
* TopicX now allows hi-bit characters (>127 ascii) in the body of the
message to be saved in the text file.
* Fixed a problem when TopicX v1.10 processed a SQUISH area and found a
matching topic that had the DELETE flag enabled, it would delete the
message and then skip the VERY next message without any questions! This
was due to the nature of the SQUISH filebase, SQUISH would internally
renumber the message base AFTER EACH DELETION, thus if message 100
was deleted, message number 101 would become number 100 and then TOPICX
v1.10 would process the "next" message (being 101), thus missing the
original message 101.
* Message text fixed when an area is skipped due to not enough messages
in it to cover the low water mark.
* Fixed the high water processing. It didn't work at all in v1.10.
* Fixed ALL to work properly. In v1.10 it wouldn't search for all the ALL
topics. It wouldn't search if there were NO topics in the body of the area.
It wouldn't search if the M flag was present in the ALL topic but not in
the specific area, etc, etc....
=*= Changes from TopicX 1.11 beta/b to TopicX 1.11 beta/c =*=
* DOS version will now process *.MSG areas, this is a bug I introduce. <blush>
* When using ALL, some strange things occasionally happened, mostly seen in the
DOS version. Now fixed, but it required a rewrite of one of Scott's routines.
Me thinks its stable NOW.
* Am I glad these two "bugs" are behind me? You BET! These were a challenge and
a half to track down because they were only being seen in DOS, and DOS's
debugging facilities is not a scratch on OS/2's. I'm glad I had OS/2 V2.0, or
else I would have been rebooting every 5 minutes under DOS, rather than just
killing the stuck DOS session and starting another DOS session. Here endth
the lesson! <grin>
* Re-established the -d command line option which had been disabled in v1.10.
* Added the message number that is saved into the header of the saved text.
=*= Changes from TopicX 1.11 beta/c to TopicX 1.11 release =*=
* Recompiled without debuging support.
FOR SUPPORT
I frequently read/monitor the international MUFFIN, TUB and OS2BBS fidonet
echo conferences, but sometimes the volume is too much and some messages slip
through, to guarrantee a reply (if one is required) you are best to NETMAIL
